The original concrete Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier opened in 1972 and extended 962 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. Multiple hurricanes destroyed the pier over the years, especially after Hurricane Opal in 1995, substantially damaging the pier. The pier underwent massive repairs and was reopened in 1999 at a length of 1,270 feet from the back door of Angler's Beachside Bar to the front fence of the octagon.
